Other targeted supports have also included the employment of an Academic Facilitator who connects with students struggling in classes and creates plans to help them remain on track for graduation. An added support that is also helping create a seamless college entrance pathway is partnerships with neighboring colleges. Counselors from the colleges have offered year-round advisement to seniors and previously graduated students. School-based therapy services have also been available to high school students in crisis.
SPECIALIZED CROSS-CUTTING COMPONENT
In 2018, EFPN began supporting specialized cross-cutting programs, the Recreation and Enrichment Program and the Adolescent Diversion Program (Project Restore). The goals of these programs have been to support efforts that significantly increase childrens’ potential for success.
During the last three years, more than 1,500 children have participated in classes offered by the City of Corning - Recreation and Enrichment program. These kids engaged in such classes as
tiny tots literacy, coding, photography, creative writing, and many other recreation and enrichment classes. The goal of the City is to sustain and expand the program to more youth. Without a dedicated recreation program, the City has relied on partner organizations to support their efforts; the collaborative action-taking has strengthened relationships across cross-sector organizations.
The Adolescent Diversion program, supported by the City of Corning, in partnership with County organizations, diverts arrested adolescents and youth from formal processing and provides them with community-based services. The City of Corning was awarded Proposition 47 funds in 2019 to expand the Adolescent Diversion Program. The rehabilitative grant previously targeted only adolescents and youth, ages 12 – 17, living in the footprint, it has since been expanded to all adolescents/youth living in Tehama County and now includes services to transitional youth, ages 18 – 24 years old.
