For the last three years, EFPN has contracted with CUESD to employ instructional assistants who support students with marked reading deficits in primary grade classrooms. Additional funds are directed to after-school and summer programming. These supplemental supports encompass
a broad range of focus areas, including providing academic support, mentoring, sports and recreation. They also offer an opportunity for youth to engage with peers in a
safe environment.
A Botvin Life Skills Coach was hired to promote positive youth development and deliver substance abuse and violence prevention curriculum to middle school students. This service continued until schools closed, and instruction changed to remote delivery. EFPN also continued to support school-based mental health services to students experiencing a crisis.
In the 2020 calendar year, the number of individual and group sessions offered exceeded 2,300.
HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE & CAREER COMPONENT
PBNI has partnered with the Corning Union High School District (CUHSD) for the last four years to improve educational outcomes for high school and college-bound students by delivering targeted interventions and college and career-focused solutions.
With the support of PN funds, students enrolled in high school have registered for college tuition-free through dual enrollment courses. In 2020 alone, more than 400 credits were earned by high school students through these particular classes. EFPN has also focused on maximizing teacher learning in mathematics, improving instructional practices, and fostering productive professional interactions across middle and high school districts. The math development
investment has deepened teachers’ curricular content knowledge and improved math concept delivery in their classrooms.
To ensure English Learner (EL) students have an opportunity to reach their fullest academic potential and prepare them for a solid
future, EFPN shared the cost of a bilingual English Learner counselor. This position works closely with EL students and their families in their academic journey and career exploration. Additionally, in the 2019-2020 year, EFPN supported the hiring of an English Language Specialist to focus on designing and implementing a coherent and aligned
set of practices, services, relationships, and approaches that have enhanced teaching and learning in the CUHSD.
